Ductless, specifically

This pair is about inverter mini splits only. The refrigerant charging manual for ducted systems is a separate title.

Ductless went from a specialty to a normal week's work faster than most training caught up with. Plenty of good techs are servicing mini splits on habits carried over from single speed equipment, which is where the callbacks come from.

The book covers inverter mini split operation and the service procedures that go with it. The companion workbook follows the book, so you can check whether the procedures stuck instead of assuming they did.

An inverter system does not behave like a single speed condenser, and the habits that work on one will mislead you on the other.

  • The compressor changes speed while you are taking the reading, so a fixed superheat or subcooling target does not mean what it means on a single speed system
  • Commissioning carries more weight: the flare, the vacuum and the line set are where a lot of ductless faults are actually created
  • Diagnostics follow the unit's own operation rather than a generic split system sequence

Craig Migliaccio wrote this as procedure rather than theory: what the system is doing, what to measure, and what the reading is telling you.

An inverter will not hold still for a fixed target.

This is the part that catches experienced techs. You put gauges on, read a superheat you do not like, and adjust against a number that was never the target in the first place, because the compressor is modulating underneath you. The book works through how the system actually operates first, so the readings mean something before you act on them.

See what is in the mini split book

Most ductless callbacks start at commissioning.

A flare that was not made properly, a vacuum that was called good early, a line set charge nobody adjusted for length. None of it shows up on the day. It shows up in a month, as a complaint, and by then the install is behind a wall. The commissioning procedures are the cheapest part of this book to learn.

The workbook tells you whether it stuck.

Reading a procedure and performing it are two different skills, and nothing on the page tells you which one you have. The companion workbook follows the chapters and asks the material back, which is a cheaper place to be wrong than a customer's wall unit.

Questions before you order

Who wrote these?

Craig Migliaccio, owner of AC Service Tech LLC. He holds an HVACR Master License in New Jersey, is licensed by the state to teach HVACR, Sheet Metal and Building Maintenance, has over 16 years in the field and owns an HVAC contracting business.

Is the refrigerant charging book included?

No. Refrigerant Charging and Service Procedures for Air Conditioning is a separate title, now in its 2nd Edition with the A2L refrigerants R-32 and R-454B. There is a combo that pairs both paperbacks if you want the ducted side too.

What does the workbook do?

It follows the mini split book, so you can work the material back and find out which procedures you have actually retained.

I have barely touched ductless. Is this too advanced?

Craig taught HVACR to high school and adult students for years, and the book starts with how the system operates before it gets to diagnostics. If you have serviced conventional split systems, you have enough to start here.

When will it arrive?

Orders normally leave within one to two business days, with free shipping inside the USA.

What if it is not what I needed?

Tell us within 30 days and we will refund it. The full terms are on the refund policy page.
